Helping Local Businesses

Published on November 13, 2020

Dear City Colleagues,

The week started out warm, but don’t be fooled: the cold weather is upon us. Its arrival is converging with the current uptick in COVID-19 cases.  As a community we need to take every step we can to slow the spread of the virus.  Nothing is more important than health and safety.  That’s why I’m very proud of two actions to improve safety under the state’s new COVID-19 yellow cluster restrictions.

Today, we announced new Winter Dining Guidelines for restaurants and bars so they can provide more outdoor seating. It’s a win-win that provides more safe and comfortable outdoor options for diners and helps local businesses. It includes guidelines for sidewalk seating and parklets; adding outdoor enclosures; and safety requirements for patio heaters. I want to thank NBD, DPW and the Fire Department for working together to create the new guidelines.

Earlier in the week, the Syracuse Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO) started accepting applications for grants of between $2,500 and $10,000 to help small businesses get through COVID-19. They can use the money to expand capacity for outdoor dining or to invest in e-commerce capabilities for curbside service and holiday shopping.  SEDCO is moving quickly and expects to be able to make a first round of awards by Thanksgiving.

We need everyone working together to turn back the COVID-19 threat. Please take every precaution – both in and out of work – to stay safe and healthy. Thank you.
