Honoring First Responders

Published on October 29, 2020

Dear City Colleagues,

Two nights ago, on the eve of National First Responder Day, the daughter of a City Hall colleague was in a car accident near downtown.  She was struck by an oncoming vehicle at an intersection.  Her car was spun sideways and badly damaged but, fortunately, she wasn’t injured.  Neither was the other driver.

To both their good fortune, a Syracuse Police patrol car was driving by when the accident happened.  Two city police officers were the first to assist them – ensuring they were safe and calling for an ambulance.  In those terrifying moments, our officers were exactly who we recognize on First Responder Day. Of course they would say it’s just routine – part of the job.  But it’s actually the definition of heroism – provided every day by police officers and firefighters to people in need at the most vulnerable times of their lives.

The U.S. Congress designated October 28th as National First Responders Day in 2017. It honors firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and all those who are first on the scene in stressful and dangerous situations. In fulfilling that duty, they put their lives on the line in situations that would cause most of us to run in the other direction.  To the members of the Syracuse Police and Fire Departments, this week and always I am deeply grateful for your service to our city. Thank you.

I can’t let this week close without also thanking the many employees who are taking a furlough day tomorrow. I appreciate your sacrifice as we continue to respond to the COVID-19 fiscal crisis. Have a safe and restful weekend.
